Grounding & Centering
"Energetic Dialysis"
One of the next most important things to cleansing yourself, your tools/possession, and your home is grounding and centering. A very popular term within the Pagan community, but nonetheless an important practice for all people. Grounding and centering is very important for one's health, but is generally overlooked.
When you feel “out of sorts”, disconnected, frazzled, and just otherwise “ick” why do you suppose that is? In some cases there is some offending thing, person, or situation around you (not necessarily in a strictly physical way) affecting you. Clearing/cleansing can remove this and its energies from around you - however sometimes that’s just not enough. Or it has “invaded” your mind. At that point you need to go a little deeper and clear your own personal energy. Cleansing can do this, but often times the ritualistic nature of that practice can be inconvenient or just not really feasible. So ground and center!
Grounding, or Earthing, is when you let your energy drain into the Earth. This is not depleting you, but it is taking all the ick from you and your aura. It is the placement and clearing of the energy out. Centering is when you draw up this energy, cleansed from the Earth, into your body and aura. This energy is whole and “untainted”. Centering has a calming and soothing affect and can be used to connect you with Source/Higher Self. It’s almost like an energetic “reset button”, or as I so fondly call it “energetic dialysis” Grounding and centering can be done at any time, whether you are feeling good or bad. It serves to reconnect you to the Earth and bring you “back down” if you are feeling spacey. They are separate exercises, but almost always done together. Thus the “out” balances the “in” so you are not overloaded. (However, you will notice if you do any sort of energy work you may be directed to do whichever compliments what you have done, like grounding after receiving energy.)
There are as many ways to ground as there are people and each way proves to be useful, though a matter of personal preference in the end.

Example:
- Imagine yourself as a tree, rooted to the earth.
- Let all within you, good, bad, and otherwise go into the earth through your roots.
- Affirm: I am grounded and connected to the Earth. As a tree with its roots.
- Take a deep breath, in and out. (More if you feel the need.)
- Then draw up energy from the Earth, this energy is light and good and energizes you.
- Feel it stretch and swirl throughout your body, to your "leaves" (fingers top of your head).
- And let it spread even further, coating your aura in white, swirling light.
- Affirm: I am centered and whole - energized in my state of Being.
- Take another deep breath, in and out. (More if you feel the need.)
Other ways to ground…
- Make contact with the Earth (you can sit on the ground or place your bare feet on the ground)
- Paint your toenails red
- Connect with the chakras in your feet
- Yoga asanas (some poses will help you both ground and center)
- Any physical exercises
